This design commission was the result of the firm's selection through an invited design competition. Its exterior design maximizes the opportunities afforded to it by the site's unique circumstances, while still being respectful and responsive to the existing context. It was these qualities that were cited as the primary reason for the firm's selection to complete the commission. Because the building is a part of a dense grouping of office, retail, residential, and parking structures, its north end, which will be the most exposed portion of the structure, serves as the front façade. This "end" of the building faces traffic entering into the development from the city's east end neighborhoods as it travels over the Hot Metal Bridge. The building was designed using the same palette of materials as an adjacent office building constructed as a part of the same development; however, the primary difference between the two buildings is that Quantum Two is clearly visible from several vantage points across the Monongahela River. Its greater height and the intentional monumental scale implied by the north façade are a direct response to this increased visibility.
