The Boyce Mayview Park Environmental Education Center is designed to be an example of sustainable building and landscape design. It emphasizes the seamless integration of both building and landscape to allow visitors to make direct connection with the environment on multiple levels. Its exterior exhibit areas are defined by a surface translation of the network of former coal mine tunnels under the site creating a framework for interpretive features. Formal qualities of the center’s building also influenced by site features. Sustainable design features of the center include: optimized solar orientation, natural ventilation and daylighting, vegetative roofs, use of recycled materials, on-site gray- and black-water recovery and treatment systems, and energy efficient building systems. |
