This distribution, warehouse, and processing facility was designed to support local food bank agencies throughout the Western Pennsylvania region. The project's requirements included improved operational efficiency and safety over their current facility. In addition, because the Food Bank's mission relates to the sustainability and the viability of the region, the project also established goals for environmental sustainability within the building program. These strategies had as their goals, a positive environmental impact for the building project itself, conservation of energy and excellent functional performance through the building design. Strategies to achieve these goals included reclamation of a brownfield site, low water and low maintenance landscape design, use of recycled and reclaimed building materials, a structural building pad made of industrial by-products, passive ventilating, operable windows, and natural daylighting. This building is one of twenty-five projects in the nation selected by the US Green Building Council for their LEED TM Pilot Program. Upon completion it was awarded a Silver rating. It is one of the first four LEED TM certified projects in the United States. Songbirds and wildlife now come to this site where formerly only weeds grew. |
