The Pittsburgh Glass Center is a comprehensive, open studio dedicated to teaching, creating, and promoting glass art. The building serves as both an exhibition of glass art and environmental responsiveness. An open plan allows for all working spaces to be accessible and observable from primary corridors, fostering greater interaction among artists. Display of glasswork is integrated throughout the building. The character and finishes of the new construction are influenced by tectonic qualities of existing steel, concrete, and masonry materials and assemblies. All working spaces are naturally ventilated, and extensively daylit with controlled north light and filtered light from the east. The entire building is heated through the use of a heat recovery system connected to the Hot Shop equipment. The new addition is clad in corrugated glass salvaged from the demolition of another structure.
