This renovation and addition to Saint Vincent Basilica creates a contextual and sensitive chapel space within the basement of the existing 130 year old structure. FortyEighty Architecture was commissioned to renovate, refurbish, and expand the existing chapel in conjunction with their ongoing restoration of the Basilica’s natural ventilation system. Existing materials, elements, and artifacts are integrated into a new holistic composition. New lighting design highlights the detailed liturgical elements and creates a dramatic, luminous vaulted ceiling. The renovated space and new entry addition are constructed of materials compatible with the existing historic Basilica, including plaster, brick, stone, and zinc coated copper roofing. the plan of the existing chapel has been subtly modified to integrate full accessibility and modern building services. new entry includes integrated lift access for the space. the renovation is targeting a Silver LEED rating with the U.S. Green Building Council. |
